The exhibition was part of Photo Oxford Festival in 2021. The exhibition was kindly funded by The Arts Council and The Oxford City Council.

Fabric of Photography, the exhibition, examines contemporary photographic practice within a historical context. It examines at the work of contemporary artists who are increasingly inspired by the historical processes and materiality of photography.

The exhibition showcases artists who are interested in the fundamentals of photography especially with regards to historical technical methods. These carefully chosen artists explore the materiality of the photographic object through experimentation and advanced technical knowledge of the analogue process.

The exhibition and workshops introduced viewers to new ways of seeing and creating photography. In particular, the workshops investigated four historical techniques of photography while focusing on the eco-conscious implications of producing photography in the 21st century. (Phytography, Chemigrams, Anthotypes, and Cyanotypes)

The exhibition connected artists from the US, France, Holland and Britain, seeking to galvanise new, global relationships and create an inclusive platform for artists and viewers to exchange thoughts.

The exhibition aims to inspire and educate viewers to see photography not only as an index of reality but also to encourage thought about ‘what is a photograph in the 21st century?’
